Coaches who charge a LOT are rarely the good coaches. You notice that yet? Yes, there’s exceptions and stuff — you know it when there are exceptions, like if you get one of the very top people who is doing an occasional thing. But in general for your regular coaches: don’t get played, young uns!

Sure, I’ll put a number on it. I think $30 an hour is the top for a regular coach — that’s for a senior coach that you KNOW is good. $20 an hour is probably more like it. Tell me if I’m way off, veterans, and I will post here if so.

I whole heartedly agree with Will Hines here and i’m one of those people that you may not even realize was on a harold team at one point. I didn’t even start coaching improv until someone asked me to. I didn’t put up a coaching thread until i was co-teaching a class at the UCB. Even then i felt weird about it i had only been doing long form for a little over 3 years.

Anyone can watch improv and give you notes on what worked and what didn’t from their perspective but not all people can teach you how to make your comedy better.

I charged $50 bucks for 2 hours up until about 3 years ago and increased my rate to $60 for 2 hours and have kept it there since. Mainly because everyone else was $60 and somehow my $50 seemed to say i was less then.

I have a directing degree and I have been a teacher in NYC public schools since 2003 I am not just an improviser watching you improvise I am a dedicated director/teacher.

This being said i don’t think you need to have the very best of the best coaches all the time, sometimes you do just need someone to watch what is happening and give you their take on things but other times you need an experienced 6 year plus coach to shape and take your team to the next level.

Try out a million coaches until you fall in love. Not everyone is the right fit.

I also offer my apartment up as free space whenever there is a small group of 2-4 people to lighten their expenses.

I have had the pleasure of coaching, directing and shaping some of the greatest people on earth (some have been dicks) and now some of those people are comedy famous and make more money then me and I love that!

Some people are really coaching you because they need the money and they think it will be fun. I can’t judge that but I will say that there are some of us out there that are dedicated to making you the best that you can be. A good coach can bring an almost dead team back alive, or take a bunch of amazing people and put a different form on them to make them shine.

I coach or teach improv every night of my life and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What am I doing to increase my chances of play time on stage:

1.) I applied for a diversity scholarship in the hopes of getting into an advanced study class.

2.) I’m doing any show that i can where ever i can.

3.) Dusting off the old standup sets and reworking them. Give it another shot why not.

4.) Cutting back on coaching and teaching to attend to my own needs of performing.

5.) Embracing the the people who have reached out to me since my last post on this subject and hopefully lifting them up as well.

6.) Be amazing or as close to that as i can possibly get.

Improvisation Annoyed Part 2

Wow such fun responses and people reaching out. Kaboom!

Things you should know before assuming you know what i’m saying in my first post.

1.) I’m not angry.

2.) I believe we are the makers of our own destiny everything is a choice.

3.) We get what we deserve at the time we should.

4.) There is nothing wrong with expressing sadness, frustration or questioning why things are the way they are, otherwise how will we ever get answers.

5.) I am allowed as a human being to question what my life can be and should be and if it’s time to do other things.

6.) My options are limited i have been given specific instructions by many people on how to perform regularly, not one offs not random indie shows. I am not complaining i know what i am supposed to do. Without spelling out these details i can only say that they are as possible as it is for me to turn into a fairy princess.

7.) I appreciate all of you, as much as some of you continue to beat me down i will never give up on thinking the best of you. And the people that constantly lift me up i can only hope all your dreams come true because you are the best.

8.) I know everyone is frustrated and has a similar story and yes yes yes. It comes at all levels and stages of this business. I won’t apologize for writing down how i feel, i say we all do it. We all have stories and they are all just as important.

9.) I have already experienced a wonderful full performing life i know that. It’s about what’s next, what’s next not wahhhhh why am i not doing shows like i did when i was in my 20s and blonde and 110 lbs.

10.) I’m not trying to stir up trouble i am considering options for how to spend my midlife crisis.

To say i’m a little frustrated would be an under statement

I have been doing long form improvising since 2001 I was very lucky to have met some amazing people in the comedy world i have gotten to work with people who are now considered “Comedy Famous’. I have improvised with these people i have directed some of these people and i have laughed with these people.

I teach comedy independently from any theatre and i do pretty well for not having any real support other then from my student super fans. (Believe me if someone offered me a job i would take it)

I coach house teams from comedy theaters, i coach every night some of the best indie teams out there. I host, and coordinate a top improv show in NYC at one of the top improv theaters. (30 min. of non paid work a day for me)

I get asked to teach krompf workshops all over the country: Boston, Tornoto, Denver, New Hampshire to name a few. ( How did these people get my info?)

I have studied with some of the best of the best out there, with Armando Diaz, Ian Roberts, Michael Delaney, Billy Merritt, Kevin Mullaney, Owen Burke and more.

I had spent years being an intern at a theatre only taking a few classes for free just because i loved helping and being there and didn’t need to take classes away from paying customers. (You fool goerlich)

I was on a Harold team that was broken up for reasons that are dubious at best.

I am a good improviser i have the confidence to say that now. Something i would have never said out loud until now but i am, i know i am. (Prove me wrong world)

I am a good Teacher/Director I know i am because of the results i get out of people i also happen to have a degree in it as well. I see people change, improve and find hope again in their comedy. All be it that once most of these people accomplish this goal they leave me in the dust and somehow forget that i was one of those people that helped them get there. Passing me by once they have gotten on their house team with not even a hello, but if this upset me i would have stopped along time ago. Happens all the time, you know who you are!

So why am i frustrated?

Because i never perform any more. Maybe once a month i get to do a one off with one of my teams or in a mix um up or something but nothing that really satiates that feeling of performing regularly.

I have inquired, approached and tried to figure out why i am not performing regularly with no real good answer. All the answers seem to fall in the impossible realm. WHY??? In Chicago they celebrate their vets and more seasoned performers.

So why am i being left in the dust? Why am i working so hard for everyone else just to not be able to perform?

I am thankful for the world that improvisation has shown me. My life feels more complete and has purpose in this weird world. I am thankful that people think i am good enough to teach them improv skills that will get them to that next level. But how much can one person give without getting anything in return? After 12 years i may have had enough.

It’s time to start making some big changes in my life because not performing is making me so depressed that i don’t want to live in NYC anymore. I don’t want to help out everyone and their improv team reach success because it’s a thankless job. I have almost zero motivation to keep on keeping on.

I know this is a sad sad post but it’s my reality and i need to get it down and out of my system. I am blessed to be a part of one of the best indie improv teams out there KROMPF but once a year performing is just not enough. But hey they are all being celebrated so i can’t complain to much. Thanks guys for having me, i guess as a woman i should just be thankful for being a part of it. (Hahaha total bullshit)

2013 will be the year of change for me if i don’t start performing regularly soon then i will have to stop all together. Maybe i’ll move to a small town, maybe i’ll move somewhere and no one will know where i am. Who knows. Maybe i’ll right a tell all book about everyones dirty little secrets in the comedy world under a pseudo name. OR maybe someone will let me perform regularly again.

Let’s see what 2013 can be.
